Salty Sea Dog and Cafe Pescado, Simon’s Town
I’d heard about Salty Sea Dog from a few people, I had also heard about the sushi spot around the corner called Just Sushi. I arrived at the sushi spot at noon yesterday but for some reason it was closed, even though the sign said open for lunch… so I went across to the Dog and ate some fine battered snoek and chips, sitting in the courtyard with great marina views. The building used to be the old fish market and you have to enter past the take-away counter, so it’s all authentic in feel. The wait is a bit long (oddly), but the fish was better than the comparative piece I had at …
Cafe Pescado, which is across the road and does not have the great setting. In fact it is pretty seedy on all counts, rather run-down and an internet station plus phot printing machine add to the back-packer feel. The fish was mealy and still shedding its freeze water, and the pizza I took home was pretty lacking in flavour, with stale basil flakes imparting that bitter taste. So this place only for last resort methinks. I season there is much need for last resorts in this pretty village though.
