Blue Waters Seafood and Sushi, Somerset West
I will honour the other addresses I’ve seen for this spot, but I think it is really in the Strand and not Somerset West. Not so easy to find, it’s on the road out of Somerset and you pass the Strand sign before coming to a tangle of restaurants – the Wild Boar pub, plus a Portuguese and Chinese spot – no-one talks about these, but Blue Waters is a seafood option that has gathered some strong local repute. It looks like a warehouse from the outside, and inside it feels like a Greek that has morphed into a franchised-looking seafood spot (echoes of Ocean Basket). Then you’re served on plates that are branded with an Italian restaurant name… is this the restaurant at the end of the universe? The agglomeration of all? There is a Twilight Zone feel to it all.
Plastic plants, worn wicker chairs, stabs of Asian decor, murky fishtank and 80s music – it is strikingly casual! There’s a sushi counter where the bulk of the menu comes from, then there’s a small selection of fish (grilled or battered) and seafood platters and kid’s meals. When I was there the pensioners were loving it, so the prices are right. Quality is also sound, so long as your mind does not stray into thinking about the state of the kitchen.
