Brewer’s & Union, Cape Town

Otherwise known as “& Union”, this is a great example of a clear-minded concept: beer and charcuterie, presented in a great-looking European brasserie-style place with cool music and vibey staff. Brought to you by the original Vida è Caffe guys, they once more prove that they “get” how to do something well. The beers are German and luxurious (the “entry” is  R40 bottle) and you order from the counter – where you can also tack on some of the cured meats hanging over at the counter. A decent bowl for a snack costs only R20, or select a platter for lunch. My first visit was a whistle-stop, the lager was too sweet to my taste, the chourizo-style sausage was very piquant and of great quality. From noon til late. Read more on it here

Yes a fantastic new spot. I was, however, under the impression that the beers were Portuguese?

So was I, but it turns out the entry level beers are brewed in Germany and the luxury beers in Belgium.

Great spot, beer and food. Hope it gets a bit busier, was quiet for a Saturday night. Maybe some high tables would help the empty looking space in the middle and I’m not sure how you eat or even drink if the edge tables are full.
Loved the platters, certainly filling and great variety. Would maybe suggest some local beers (Jack Black?!) and seasonal menu changes (meats/cheese/bread)to keep it fresh and often visited.

Hey liz, I went on saturday and it was really busy. The word on the street that this is such a fine spot, is out. You must return. I’ll buy you a beer! They have live funky music on a saturday from (i think) 7pm. Wow, now that just puts the cherry on the cake. Great beer, great food and great music. i was in heaven. And plenty of space to eat. I like this place alot!

Liz, i think the suggestion of Jack Black beer at this fine Cape Town eatery is missing the point. These are luxury beers. Not your average run of the mill beer. And as far as i know, the owners of the beer are the owners of & Union. I had one the best meals out by far. And a big thank you to Rui Esteves and Brad Armitage on this eatery. My beer complemented my meal so well, i took home a case to enjoy with friends and family. I be back. In a hurry.

Was there tonight for the first visit. Very tasty meats, and a fine espresso. The dark Tripel was slighly too sweet for my tastes, but worked well with the spicy meats. Also had the &Union unfiltered, which would work well as a taster, but is almost a mead with it’s slightly cloying sweetness. Will be sticking to the Gabriel Pils on future visits.

I agree that local beer Jack Black wouldn’t quite be a good fit for this establishment, but to say that Jack Black is run of the mill is way off base. Jack Black beer is a premium local beer made to seriously high standards. Not only is it also slow brewed (like the union beers), but it’s also fresh – ie has not been shipped in containers half way around the world. Anyhow, nice beers.

I know nothing about Beer (although I was very tempted to try the Rafael White Ale – maybe next time!) but the no-label Haut Espoir Syrah certainly hit all the right spots as did the wonderful charcuterie plate – lovely soft tender meat and the delicious cheese plate. With this great quality I hope they can perhaps come up with something more appropriate than the wrapped butter portions! Great food, friendly appropriate service and a great vibe even on a Wednesday night.

Really amazing Beer, although a bit pricey. Unfortunately being inside &Union is usually freezing and really lack’s atmosphere. Not as intimate and welcoming as something like Caveau, just one block down, or other small bars like Julep on long street. Have been a couple of times and taken groups of friends there, even on busy nights. Thought the Vida guys would pull of a great bar concept.

I was there Thursday night. Awesome. Bad weather so everyone was inside. Cozy!

PS the free range prego was damn fine! Made me want to drink more beer! Intentional I’ll bet!
