Consistency

Been on the road promoting and selling the guide, with quick lunches that leave little to report. Did have a good piece of cob at Caveau in town, plus a discussion with one of the owners about consistency. It was over this that I awarded Caveau a “two plus” and not  the highest accolade of three stars in the latest Rossouw’s guide. He obviously saw it differently. Consistency is the hallmark of a good place, because even if they don’t pitch at the highest level, you know what you are in for. And that is very reassuring to the diner, who generally does not want surprises (especially the bad ones).

Regarding the diner, I have received mostly very favourable comment on the new look and system of the 2009 Rossouw’s Restaurants. I have also received two very negative messages which clearly indicate that some people really don’t like change. Clearly, my intention with the guide is always to make it easier to use. I do already have a few improvements in mind, but this will have to wait for the 2010 edition. As ever, feedback welcome, especially the constructive type.
