Country eating
Affie Plaas, Robertson has a fantastic deli if you’re on the road. It also has the Country Kitchen where the very studiously country idiom (old farm implements, old biscuit tins) was yesterday modified by a somnambulist classical guitarist. The menu is simple, but with a detailed description of how they approach plate sharing (which tells you something either about their clientele or the South African public). They also boldly advertise their born-again status, which I guess wins them more diners in these parts than it loses. It’s honest, hearty food and I nearly tried the chicken pie before being introduced to the specials, whereupon the lamb and waterblommetjie potjie came my way. Good stuff. The Hungry Man reckons they consistently do well with recipes from the Cape country cookbook, and while their coffee was poor the home-made shortbread is great.
