Delheim, Stellenbosch

On a raining winter’s day, Delheim sets a comforting tone. Its conservatory windows allow a view of the weather, while the wood-burning oven, chunky wooden furniture, wicker chairs and brick floor and walls are warm in a rustic fashion. Dogs lay about or sit on their hind legs, expectant but not overly demanding. Larger tables also invite communal groups to linger, and the menu features a few German specialities like zweibelkuchen and bratwurst; also lamb shank and Cape chicken curry or bobotie. Kid’s menu, platters also for groups, while the wine is estate-own at estate prices.

As a summer’s venue, with its patio under the trees, it’s ideal – so it was great to discover just how comforting it also is in winter.  Delheim Wine Estate, Knorhoek Road. 021 888 4607
