First came across this seafood-first concept in Rosebank – but I was told on Monday that this one is closed? Any confirmation?
In Kalk Bay, FSH strikes an out-of-step franchise feel against all the “character” of the other eateries (though “character” is no immunisation against sloppy service and ordinary food). The building is well-situated and all its glass allows for views onto the sea and harbour, with a comely deck. The interior with its wood and contemporary fittings is pretty but turning scruffy and also generic (assisted by the top-of-pops soundtrack); while the welcome is very warm and service good (unlike the pizza joint close by, Satori, that we first stepped into). At FSH, acoustics do tend to be loud. This venue used to be WineSense store, a flagship of sorts, with food as a integral element. The only legacy of the wine months (not even sure it went a year) is the fancy wine preservation system that is installed and allows for fresh by-the-glass offerings. Otherwise the wine list is very Overberg-heavy. The menu naturally focuses seafood; with salads a few hot starters, then sushi and DIY platters that you create by visiting the fishmonger’s counter. The fishmonger concept – overspend is inevitable.
Overall the food was average to good. Average sushi and salads and calamari (salt and peppered, but this not coming through); good on the grilled fish and king prawns. Dessert, an affogato, was dire and constructed from poor ingredients. But with decent fish and a well-priced wine list – and these views – should be very popular.

Was there earlier this year for cocktails. The martini came with tiny shards of ice in the glass – which only watered down the gin. Not terribly impressed.
We went there about 8 months ago, but the experience was so shocking that I feel I have to logon to this site to say so. Do your best to avoid when in Kalk Bay, rather try Polana… (actually most of the others in Kalk Bay should be better!)
Thanks for the comment, but some detail on what made it such a shocker would be appreciated?
I can confirm that FSH in Rosebank has closed down.
Thanks Greg. I find this strange, it had such a good position. Then again so does the Kalk Bay one, but people are not convinced.
I was also surprised. In addition to the position the setup was also very attractive and food decent quality (except for the Nola mayonnaise I saw being used as a substitute for sushi mayonnaise). Another restaurant hit by the 2009 recession???
I confirm that FSH in Rosebank is closed. Whole block is being demolished, it’s diagonally right across from the new Gautrain Rosebank station. Everyone else in the block has gone elsewhere (Doppio Zero moved) or simply vanished.
