Greek, Mowbray

On one of Cape Town’s most oppressively hot days, I snuck into Greek for a lunch – and nearly got cooked myself. The place has no aircon and what little air flowed came from the heat of the oven. It’s looking ever-more shabby, the interior, and the hard split into smoking and non makes it feel like two restaurants – smoking the more attractive with streetside feel (though this street is a noisy beast). Music is also loud, so come if you’re allergic to conversation. The Greek-styled, though often updated, menu offers good value portions (another cue to the chief customer being the student) and the kitchen is slow, but just behind the relaxed service. Food, for the price, is fair enough, wine list poor, coffee ordinary.

You are correct in some of your observations. I have been going there for three years now on a regular basis. The decor has not changed much but I have noticed that the chairs seem to falling apart because if you move your bottom the cover may just fall off. Previously they had quite a vibey grpip of waitresses who gave the place a vibey feel and certainly was a attraction. Lately however, it seems to really dull & boring. The street is very noisy.
The food is good though and I have necer had reason to complain (except the moose desert). The atmoshpere is very relaxed & that is why I go there still, although less & less.

I’ve gone to Greek a few times over the past couple of years, and I find that it is worsening. Sure, the prices are great, but the value is no longer there as the food is getting worse. The decor is becoming tackier as well. On my most recent trip, I found it quite disappointing to walk into a Greek restaurant only to find that the aerial shelves were decked out with bottles of cheap, triple refined oil and soy and fish sauce. What a shame…this used to be a great restaurant.

We re-visited Greek last night after a 2 year stay-away due to lousy food & service. Not much has changed, despite the place being full & buzzing. The 3 lone waitrons were slow & service slack. There was no Mousaka or Youvetsi on the menu – and when the food did come it was accompanied with rice & salad – all rather uninteresting…. The basic greek salad is no where near a “greek” salad, and our mains were mixed up – so we ended up eating seperately. At least the waiter admitted his mistake! So we will be staying away I think , for good this time………….There was no manager/owner in sight – or was that the lady sitting down having her own party!!!!!
