Ile de Pain, Knysna

As ever, this bakery cum café delivers. They are so good, there is little reason to go anywhere else for breakfast in this town. It’s worth driving from Plett to have breakfast here. Many people do. If you are familiar with the menu, there’s a new item called “egg Como” that’s a must-try. Mid-morning, their pastries are sublime (try the opera), and the lunch menu features light options as well as a small steak or the good duck confit. Fun, well-selected wine list.

As you can tell, I really do enjoy this spot, as do hordes of others. The staff are on-the-ball, but the ball moves fast, so if there are too many people when you arrive, make your way to Mon Petit Pain, on Grey Street just up from the waterfront. Here you’ll find a mini version, but with the same quality in breads and pastries, and a great coffee.
