Stanley Street used to house Vovo Telo Pizzeria – one of the better pizza outlets in Port Elizabeth and indeed the country. The Vovo Telo brand has been taken national by Famous Brands and now the original owner of Vovo Telo has re-branded the pizzeria space as Charlie Superstar. With a retro “Hollywood” style and a menu that is still pizza-led, it’s again a popular option on this strip. Another modern-retro spot that has recently opened is the utterly charming café and coffee shop called Friendly Stranger on Upper Valley Road. Housed in a stone garret of a building that used to be the harbour master’s house, there is a downstairs lounge with very low ceiling that is either cosy or claustrophobic depending on your tolerance, while upstairs is a fun mix of antique and modern furniture and walls full of colourful art, plus an industrial coffee station. Window tables and a wooden deck with an ancient tree growing out of old stone completes the unique picture. The menu offers salads, burgers, flatbreads, nachos, pies and steaks – and there’s an extra level of quality in all, along with very good coffee. The building alongside this eccentric stone house features a brewery and coffee roastery, making this another food focal point on the local map.
