Comment on DW Eleven-13, Dunkeld West by Jean Pierre Fotinidis

My Fiancé and I went to DW Eleven-13 last night the 21st February 2012, to celebrate our fourth year anniversary. It truly was a remarkable evening, not only due to impeccable melt in your mouth food which made your taste buds dance with the extravagance of flavours, the respectable wines, the intimate yet refined atmosphere – We have to thank the entire group for making last night a truly memorable experience.

We have been to a couple of the top restaurants in Johannesburg, but DW Eleven-13 is by far the finest. The service is incomparable, the waitrons are well presented and profusely friendly. The managers continuously walk around to each individual table ensuring that you are satisfied throughout the entire meal. The staff go over and beyond, and give you that feeling of pure elegance.

The food from appetiser to dessert, the complimentary freshly baked flavoured breads to the home-made caramelised popcorn and mint marshmallows are truly unbelievable. Chef Marthinus Ferreira and kitchen staff bring a whole new concept and meaning to the South African food standards with his creations and taste sensations.

All I can honestly say is if you are in the mood for exquisite food and wine or just want to show your appreciation for the one you love, this is most definitely THE place to go. But be warned you better book well in advance or perhaps you may just be one of the lucky few on the cancellations waiting list to receive that long awaited call.

The only words that would best suit this restaurant are straight from Gordon Ramsey himself “It is like s*x on your tongue" and it truly is.

My concern about Simon's is the Basque Chicken and the Confit Duck, the Caesar Salad and the Moules. At one of the Big Five Tourist destinations of the Cape and one so much part of the history of wine in the Cape, are Bredie, Bobotie, Kerrievis, Sklipaaitjies, Slaphaakskeentjies being offered to the many foreign guests looking for a taste of the Cape? Such good news that Rudi is back in the restaurant business in the Cape again. I thought we'd lost him. Michael

We had a terrible experience at Soho. We ordered take-aways from Soho for 4 people. When we picked up our food and brought it home, we discovered that not a single one of our dishes came as ordered. The tofu dish was a fish dish, the sweet & sour dish was neither, the green chicken curry arrived as red curry duck, and the noodle dish (with chicken and sauce) was vegetable fried rice.

We returned the food for the correct order. When we arrived back at the restaurant (now over 1 hour after we placed our order), the replacement order was waiting. Only, the restaurant again forgot to include one dish. When I informed them of this, the manager went back into the kitchen and came out to tell us that they don't have all the ingredients required for the noodle/chicken dish - I explained that this fact should have been communicated when we placed our order or shortly thereafter, to which the manager gave a dumb-found look. The kitchen recommended a replacement dish, which we took.

All-in-all, it took over 2 hours for the correct food to be given to us.

The manager, who I think was new, didn't seem to care about the problem (and obviously doesn't know how to run a restaurant properly).

Not the way we like to entertain guests from out of town.

Don't bother coming here - the marginally-decent thai food is not worth the frustration.

Currently on holiday in Joburg (as one does), I dined at So Yum last night and was amused and disappointed to see that they have added sushi to their menu. The dim sum; chicken money bags and steamed pork buns; was superb. Duck ramen also very pleasing, especially with the authentic noodles, I agree with you about the need to add some bite to it. Best mall dining option in Joburg as far as I can tell.

Overrated, overpriced and pretentious. The restaurant has the ambience of a 1970s conference centre and the staff are not up to the heights the restaurant aspires to. The food is contrived and the combinations verge on the ridiculous.

I agree with most of the review! I do however want to warn any Frenchmen or Eggs Benedict fan, to stay clear of it in this establishment for breakfast.
The Hollandaise sauce was so close to Mayonnaise that I thought they mistakenly served it with Mayonnaise and asked the waiter to check with the kitchen if the sauce was indeed Hollandaise and not Mayonnaise....he came back and confirmed that it was indeed Hollandaise...
