A birthday delight | By Neal | Wednesday, 26 October 2011
It's my wife's birthday and I really need and want to make this special. Some place with an relaxed but elegant atmosphere, good food (maybe something unusual) and unobtrusive service. I am very happy with my choice of Constantia Uitsig.
We were met and greet promptly at the door and given the choice to to sit outside and have a sparkling wine or go through directly to out table. We chose to sip on some bubbly outside and were surprised with a dozen oysters when the chef, Clayton Bell, heard it was my wife's birthday. While outside our order for starters was taken. This meant that when we moved inside it was mere moments before we could taste our starters. We decided on seafood for starts: scallops and octopus carpaccio with chorizo.
I wont wax on too lyrically about mains either - go there the food should speak for itself. After a refreshing berry and Merlot sorbet we were ready for our main meal. A brazed lamb shank. Amazing. And a rib-eye steak with an asparagus based sauce that was, in a word, perfect.
I need to emphasize that the food was well prepared, well presented and one could appreciate and taste each mouthful for what it was.
I chose a Constantia Red to enjoy and compliment the site and occasion. Can't go wrong with that.
Dessert was an easy choice as both y wife and I have a weakness for crème brûlée. The touching finale was the drizzled chocolate decoration wishing my wife a happy birthday.
The evening was everything I expected it to be. And even at about R500 per head all in, I will be back!
