Southern Light, Harbour House gets its so, so right | By Sam | Thursday, 16 February 2012
Harbour House has always topped my list of places to take visitors to Cape Town. It's an all-inclusive package: stunning views, good service, fish coming out of your ears, and if you're lucky, a few crashing waves on the windows, making your mates squeal with excitement at the sheer glamour and thrill of it all. For me, the real joy of HH is that it's slap bang in the middle of a raw, visceral (fish guts everywhere), smelly working harbour where you couldn't get any closer to the fish unless you hooked it yourself and landed it wriggling and squirming onto your plate.
The collection of restaurants that make up the Harbour House family are a sort of Fishies R' Us megastore, with different offerings to suit different budgets. Harbour House itself sits firmly on the top, both in terms of food and price, but it's worth it. They do fish well, not formal, fine dining, five star stuff, but well flavoured, well cooked and big portions for hungry punters. If you're watching the cash, avoid the crayfish as it's not cheap, but otherwise its pricey but fair. In any other country in the world you'd be paying four times this much. Sushi is very good if a bit unadventurous, and last weekend they were out of tuna which was a shame. Our guests did wonder why they weren't offering more local fish as sushi, rather than the emphasis on salmon and prawns, but I suspect thats what the market demands. Service is good, but very nusy so we found ourselves waiting a while for our mains, but the view and the seals frolicking helps to pass the time. All in all, still a fantastic way to celebrate any occasion, or just to show off to the tourists. I suspect there's been more than one person who has decided to move to Cape Town from overseas after a lazy lunch at Harbour House
Enjoy the view - and with a bit of luck the fish is great | By Reimer | Monday, 07 November 2011
We love Harbour House. Not just the views - the fish is freshfresh, so don't miss out on the yellowtail tartare. They are not scared of charging you, so don't go if you are a value-for-money specialist. Otherwise: enjoy!
