Family Unfriendly and Racial Stereotyping | By Adrian | Sunday, 13 May 2012
I took my wife and 18 month son to the Butcher Shop for Mother’s Day lunch. My son is a fussy eater, so I took a Woolworths kiddies meal along so that he could have it for lunch. When I asked the manager (Daryl) at the Butcher Shop to warm it in their microwave, he gave us this attitude, interrogating me about who the meal was for and why we were not buying the kiddies meal from their menu.
This was about 2.30pm and my son was hungry, and Daryl argues with me and tells me I have to ask him for permission to warm my sons food/ feed my son the Woolies meal. I was asking him to warm the meal! He seemed to want me to ask permission to feed my son. After an argument he did get the meal warmed, but this had completely ruined the experience for my wife and me and we left. So much for a family friendly environment.
I guess if you are still bottle feeding your baby it won't allow be allowed either unless you buy milk from the menu. I suspect Daryl was applying a racial stereotype to us i.e. cheap Indian looking to save a buck. He also commented he had never seen us before and did not know who we were. That’s easy Daryl, we were paying customers.
We have been there many times in the past but no longer. Since when does a restaurant have the right to tell you that you must ask for permission to feed your kids?
overpriced arrogance | By Derek | Wednesday, 23 November 2011
I agree with the other reviewers - the food is average (the Grillhouse is far superior), the wine overpriced, the service arrogant, and they refuse to serve you a glass of tap water. I have tried the experience on at least 5 occasions (at the requests of business acquaintances) and found the experience always disappointing.
I simply do not understand the attraction | By Tassin | Sunday, 28 August 2011
Having dined at the Butcher Shop on numerous occasions (the only easy restaurant in Sandton to appease meat eating clients) - I simply do not understand the attraction of this establishment. The food is average (at best) but usually poorly resented and cooked. The range is limited and offerings are overpriced. Staff are ok - but tend to be 1) all male and 2) patronising to female clientele (I pay the bill often but am never presented with it). I only go back as ill-informed clients request this restaurant. I would prefer The Grillhouse or Wombles any day.
After shopping at Sandton City, we decided to stop for dinner, bored of all other stuff on the square and inappropriately dressed for Picollo Mondo and Pigalle we decided to visit this place.
Anyways, the waiter wouldn't serve me tap water...Just for that I will never go back.
Disappointing evening | By Michel | Wednesday, 18 May 2011
A work colleague and I decided to invite 3 Norwegian Business associates to Nelson Mandela Square on Friday night 11th March 2011. We then decided, for the first time, to try out the butcher shop. Upon entrance, we were treated to waiters that need serious training in service etiquette. The Master Sommeliers as i was browsing the wine menu was overassertive, and while we were entertaining a working relationship, i did not need to be asked (in a Dictatorial manner) “How much did i want to spend” in front of the Norwegians. Notwithstanding the fact that i thought, coming from a wine collector myself, that the wines are grossly overpriced and a complete rip off. In fact, The Sommelier kept using the first bottle price as the bench mark to recommend the next bottle. I thought that given your status symbol as a top quality steak restaurant, the food prices were reasonable. However, once the meal was received, my starter and main were not fantastically special and I thought my mushroom starter was incredibly plain and unimaginative. A simple cappuccino needed to be sent back to the kitchen because it was too cold. Quite frankly, there are a number of steakhouse restaurants that I can recommend, way above this one.
Comparitively, I have been to The Butcher Boys in Durban which far out weighs the Butcher Shop and Grill at Nelson Mandela Square. Even more disappointing was the fact that this letter via email was sent directly to the Butcher Shop and Grill on the 14th March 2011 and no response was ever received.
Certainly far from a 3 star rating shown in your handbook.
