From the Restaurant...
La Colombe is one of Cape Town's most well-loved and awarded restaurants. Fusion, Asian and French cuisine is served in a classic, elegant ambience. With impeccable service and an award-winning wine list, La Colombe is a truly unforgettable experience.
Still amongst the very, very best | By Luc | Monday, 16 April 2012
It is good to know that some restaurants in the Cape can keep up the highest standards, over and over again. La Colombe is definitely one of them. It is simply one of the very, very best - even since Luke Dale Roberts left for his magnificent Test Kitchen. Our Sunday lunch was just perfect, with the smoked chocolote tart as the most wonderful way to finish off a great meal.
La Colombe does offer excellent value for money. In a similar top class restaurant in Europe, you will pay 3 times the price - if you are lucky. Service was slick, professional and very personal, with a nice chat at the end.
The only (minor) down side is the restaurant itself - it's time for a serious make-over to keep the setting on par with the superb food & wine experience.
Excellent Food but wine service needs to be improved | By Christian | Thursday, 12 April 2012
Dinner on 1st of April 2011. As last year the food was excellent, especially the springbok was in an outstanding quality. Since we asked for a wine paring for each of our a la carte courses we were slightly disappointed about the wine knowledge of our waitress. For the main course the wine even came too late (after the course has been served).
But what definitely not should happen was that she mixed our wines. My wife ordered had a glass of White Pinotage and I had a Cederberg Bukettraube. After a while our waitress wanted to add more wine into our glasses (from the little carafes standing next to our table). Not only that she seemed to be very unsafe which of the wines was the White Pinotage and which one the Bukettraube but she finally put the White Pinotage in the glass with the Bukettraube and vice versa. So both my wife and me had a "white blend" in our glasses. This should really not happen in such a restaurant!
But basically we would go back to La Colombe next time because of the excellent dishes and the lovely atmosphere. And we hope that the service - especially regarding wines - will be improved again.
We had an impromptu lunch at la Colombe in April and it blew our minds.
Every aspect was perfectly executed and My wife and i have no trouble declaring the best meal we have ever had to date.
We live in London and have been to many Michelin started restaurants that cannot touch the level of service, standard of food, quality of wine recommendations and setting of this fantastic place. Highly recommended
Still on top | By Jason | Wednesday, 15 December 2010
The food business is clearly a fickle one. A year ago, when we last ate at La Colombe, it was Eat Out's top rated restaurant and was soon to be announced by San Pellegrino as the 12th best in the world. The general assumption (and I use that word intentionally) seems to have been that with the departure of chef Luke Dale Roberts to a new venture, La Colombe should ipso facto receive a demotion.
The proof however is to be seen not only in the pudding, but also in the other six courses which make up a wonderful tasting menu. And that's not to mention the additional tapas amuse bouche, palate cleanser and bon-bons.
The menu retains its fusion of classic French and Asian influences with modern flavour combinations and platings. The dishes are highly complex and technical in execution and the flavours delivered by the various foams, mousses, jellies and volutes even surpassing the pleasures of the main ingredient!
As always, the service is spot on, professional and highly knowledgeable and it is seldom that one is able to debate the merits of a wine paring with the person serving you. With one exception, the pairings were spot on.
All in all a thoroughly enjoyable experience that I have no hesitation in recommending, and I'm sure that La Colombe and chef Scot Kirton will find themselves back on the top of many lists in the future.
