    Nobu   V&A Waterfront, Cape Town
Don't buy into the hype   | By FIona | Saturday, 28 January 2012
Nobu is okay. It is cetainly not the best sushi in Cape Town or the best exampe of Japanese food either. I would say that Kyoto Gardens has that honour. For the price I expect a lot more. We had the 8 course chef's tasting menu and while the black cod miso was remarkable, the other white fish dishes were not great. I repeatedly asked our numerous waiters to explain what we were eating with limited success. I was told the one dish had salmon in it which it did not, that the white fish sushi was kinglip (which I have never eaten raw before, maybe it was?) and had the desert described as an ice cream fondant, when it was in fact a chocolate fondant. Nobody could exlain what the red sauce on the beef was. It ended up overwhelming the food and was too rich with the foie gras topping the beef. I'm splitting hairs, but we were paying R895 a head for this experience. A similiar priced meal at "The tasting room" last month was infinintly better.

Well worth it!   | By Lindsay | Tuesday, 18 October 2011
After shunting Nobu to the side due to the stories we had heard of "a meal for two costing R2000.00" and "the waitress only paid attention to the bigger tables" we finally decided to put these views aside and decide for ourselves the quality of this world renowned restaurant.

We were definitely not disappointed! We arrived and were escorted down to the exquisitely decorated restaurant, where en route we were welcomed by a shout of welcome in Japanese from ALL the staff – extremely intimidating when it happens to you, but adds a wonderful atmosphere when it's happening to other new comers! We chose to sit at the sushi bar, my partner being a chef himself likes to keep an eye on the action, and the brigade of chefs were friendly and willing to explain all the fresh ingredients while keeping on top of the ever increasing orders.

We decided to order an arrangement of dishes and trusted our very knowledgeable and friendly waitress, Noxie, on some of her recommendations. We started with the Salmon and Tuna Tacos with a tomato relish along with a dish of deep fried rice with ponzu dipping sauce – I would give the tacos a miss as the concept is wonderful but they just don't come together very well, resulting in a mass of raw fish in a soggy in places taco. The fried rice on the other hand is addictive.

We then moved on to the sushi and were blown away! Definitely the best in Cape Town with the rice being prepared perfectly, the freshest fish and the sizes of the cut rolls spot on. We devoured our way through three orders of sushi and then my partner had the deep fried prawns with an assortment of dipping sauces while I had yet more sushi!

We finished off with drinks outside by the water and over all had a truly wonderful experience that didn't break the bank and that we hope to repeat soon!

Sushi Bar a sure bet...   | By Tony | Saturday, 02 April 2011
We go to the Sushi Bar at Nobu about once a month and always love it - chatting to the chefs and staff as they go about their business, seeing all the dishes come out and of course combining a new one or two with the tempura prawns nasu miso and sushi to finish. A dollop of green tea ice cream cleanses the palate perfectly.

The price is justified   | By Sanjay | Friday, 10 December 2010
Although i find the front of house service a bit weird and hence i always sit at the Sushi Bar, the food and knwledge that TakamiNobu ( i dont believe any relation to Nobu himslef) is a masterclass in all that is what fine dining and committment to perfection is. Spending 2 hours at the sushi bar in Takami's presence is a lesson in perfection. I am happy to pay what is asked at Nobu as i dont believe any other restuarant is able to replicate the quality and originality of their product. Its only a once a month visit an would love it to be more.
