Upmarket trattoria | By Craig | Saturday, 18 February 2012
My partner and I have been dining at il Tartufo for some time.
We enjoyed it prior to Luciana's arrival and enjoy the sense of hub-bub that she has brought with her.
The style if the restaurant is stylish, with tasteful finishes and furnishing. They really do make the most of being located in an office park.
Service is good - attentive and knowledgeable professional waiters.
Food is trattoria style, however at a level of sophistication that one finds would find in Italian ristorante, sans the formality and stuffiness. One criticism is however the portion sizes are not in line with Italian trattoria.
Menu choices are very good, fresh pasta being a particular favourite of mine.
Wine list is very good, limited but good by-the-glass choices.
Wonderful Italian Food | By Tassin | Sunday, 28 August 2011
We have now been to Tartufo three times - all wonderful food experiences. While the atmosphere is rather stiff and formal, the food and service is exceptional. Absolutely recommended, particularly the Mussels in Tomato starter and the veal cutlet mains.
Lovely Restuarant | By Alistair | Tuesday, 22 March 2011
This really is a lovely place! Dinner for 4 was really an experience here. Dinner starts with the ever present Italian Restaurant staple of bread with olive oil and balsamic vinegar, after this our waiter arrived to inform us of the specials. The real kick for me here was the depth of knowledge that the waiting staff had for the meals, this really was unexpected for Johannesburg restaurant!
Starters were a table plate of anti-pasto consisting of parma ham, bresola, mortadella and salami as well as 3 Italian cheese varieties. The quality was undeniable as the plate left the table clean 5 mins later!
Main courses were fantastic! Rabbit with polenta (yes bunnies are yummy!), veal with porcini mushrooms (fantastic fresh earthy flavours!), Veal with marsala (always a good option) and prawns in a fresh tomato sauce. The real bonus here was the lovely veggies served with meal, not the normal mush of butternut and creamed spinach served on each plate, but rather a beautifully cooked selection of seasonal veg that complemented each main separately.
Desserts here are really the star attraction! Testament to this was the utter silence that descended on out table as they arrived (chocolate fondant, berry meringues and panna cotta with brandy and espresso sauce).
The service is brilliant, always attentive, but never obtrusive. The wine list is fantastic with some real classic bottles in the cellar, the price is a little on the steep side, but their wine list seem to be designed to complement the menu.
