Some intimacy in Jozi's Sandton | By Craig | Saturday, 21 January 2012
TM is located in a strip of peculiar shops close to the heart of generally sterile Sandton. It is a nice bistro serving a wide range of European food..
They try to be eclectic with the decor, a little too contrived in my view.
Menu contains limited choice of generally well received dishes.
Wine list is good.
Service is excellent, proprietor and his staff very attentive.
Reasonable value for money.

What a great place! From the quirky decor, a personal welcome and service, great food and fab winelist, to the fact that the restaurant is not in a mall (hurray!) and that you get a real European Bistrot feel - Thomas Maxwell Bistro ticked all the boxes. You MUST take the decadent Crayfish pasta which was on the specials menu; penne pasta, crayfish, "caviar", truffle infused cream and generous shavings of good parmesan. Absolutely to die for! Dont expect to fit in a starter or dessert, though, it is very rich. My partner's meal was also excellent; rabbit risotto. We loved the menu; there is not one ordinary dish on it - it is very inspiring and very different to what all the others are doing. You must book for dinner - they get very busy. Enjoy!
TMB - may first impressions fade quickly | By William | Wednesday, 26 January 2011
I'm no professional critic, but i do eat out often and prefer paying for good quality food rather than being ripped off fod inferior food. Having moved to Cape Town 5 years ago, I have perhaps become slightly spoilt with the limitless choices we have in the mothercity. Great eateries are on our doorstep, innovation is good, and choice not limited to franchises or steakhouses. I was keen to sample the food at TM after reading your review (and given the 3 stars). Unfortunately I found them wanting, both from a value for money perspective, but also considering the quality of the food (the space is interesting, and a does create a good atmosphere, though i can suggest covering part of the inside wall with art / items they enjoy being around). The tomato tart was flavourful, but cooked whole tomatoes can be watery and that resulted in a soggy pastry and a plate full of juice. My wasabi sirloin was cooked as ordered, the duck pie was tasty and filling, and the prawns, prawns. The potato chips are cooked well, if slightly salty. I would like to have more choice as side orders - but accept the bistro theme and weren't disappointed with what we reecived. The wine list however is good, but i can suggest better quality "by the glass" options. The coffee was good, and cupcakes looked amazing.
Perhaps they were under pressure following the review and 3 stars, and the place was packed on the Monday evening we visited. I'll give them the benefit of the doubt and will visit again, as JHB and surrounds are in need of real alternatives.

Great restaurant, my favorite in Joburg. Always busy and good atmosphere. Menu does not change often, however the specials menu has a lot to offer. Chef pays a lot of attention to the customers which is a nice touch. Wine list is good.
