Lunch here on what felt like the last Cape summer’s day of the year. Probably isn’t, but you know the feeling of a turning, so you hurry to one of the Cape’s finest outdoor restaurants. The menu at the lunch venue of the Roundhouse, Rumbullion, has been moderated in it’s monstrosity, but still features hearty comfort food. With winter’s approach, they are moving the shebang indoors and into the main restaurant, and (I am told) adding some new dishes, also refining somewhat. Come summer again, we can expect a more diverse outdoor menu also with a kid’s menu and play area.
Co-owner Fasie was on the floor and he always adds considerable zest to affairs, along with great capability. Part of the enterprise here is staff training from scratch, and I have always admired the attitude of the trainees, even though they can fall short (stating the obvious). Our food was good: a Caesar that was properly so (but quite tame in sauce zing); liver and mash very tasty; butternut tortellini very good and generous. Also a burger – this one classic (with bun!) and a great patty, embellished with bacon and cheddar, shoe-string fries. Desserts are decadent and highly proficient and I would be remiss not to skip back to the beginning and comment on the fine bread.

The lunch concept here has undergone a complete overhaul, now picnics where most of the food is “potted” and done in fine style, reminds of an upscale game lodge. Breakfasts are also a treat – great pastries and a tight selection of breakfast favourites like eggs Benedict or French toast (brioche style). It’s setting on the lawns makes this one of the city’s finest breakfast options.
