The three star conundrum

If one star is for good food for its price category (so better than most in category); two is for good food plus a little more (service, wine list, setting) and three is reserved for a really very good all-round experience – which restaurants would you nominate for three?

    2 stars is easy…but 3 is hard!
    I would like to suggest:
    The Food barn
    Bosman’s
    Caveau
    Dinner at the Olympia Bakery

Any idea what’s going on with Platine? Seemingly not contactable.

    Thanks for the votes Liz.

Platine is unfortunately closed and I fear will not reopen.

I’ve been thinking about Caveau as a 3-star contender, and have talked myself into agreeing. The only concern is whether everyone gets 3-star service, or just those of us who were there the day it opened, and regularly since? Surprisingly, I’m more persuaded of Caveau (City) as a 3-star nominee than the Mill, as while the food is better at the Mill, the service is often poorer, and the food at City is better than most in its category.

I agree, there is a better all round experience at Caveau city, service and ambiance wise. I did mean to clarify that!

I can think of several restaurants that would easily fit into the 3 star category. Unfortunately they are mostly in San Francisco and surrounds (The French Laundry, Gary Danko, Slanted Door and more).

Jozi is a little more of a challenge. In the last couple of months the places that I enjoyed were The Orient and Pomodoro in Morningside. I feel they are both 3 star contenders but then I hear negative criticisms from people I know. If the ‘consistency’ is not there, then I dunno, maybe 3 star contenders vs 3 star title holders.
If I unfairly compared them against my top 10 San Francisco list, they would not feature. But the question of international parity is another debate.

Also, because consistency is so hard to master, I am only thinking of places that I have been to recently. I have had great experiences at Linger Longer, but a while back.

I have to admit though, I think Cape restaurants provide a better dining experience that Jozi restaurants.
